Scholarships

Scholarships are available to anyone who wishes to take AFOA Canada courses. These are intended to offset the full registration costs for AFOA Canada courses and help qualified candidates who do not have the financial resources required to pursue one of AFOA Canada’s designations or attend professional development courses.

Categories


Online Courses

For candidates who wish to take an online course in the CAFM or CAPA programs, available through AFOA Canada. This scholarship will offset the cost of one course from the full program.

In-Person Cohorts (Currently Virtual)

Available to participants who will enroll in the in-person sessions of the CAFM, CAPA, CIL or CIHRP programs. These scholarships will offset the cost of either tuition, travel, accommodations or a combination thereof.

Due to the pandemic, all sessions in these programs are being delivered virtually and scholarships will offset the cost of tuition. The following scholarships are available:

Certified Indigenous Human Resources Professional (CIHRP) Program – Ten scholarships available, each one will cover the cost of two of the four sessions.

Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) Program – Eight scholarships available, each one will cover the cost of three of the six sessions.

Certified Indigenous Leadership (CIL) Program – Five scholarships available, each one will cover the cost of two of the four sessions.

Capacity Development Workshops

For anyone who will participate in Capacity Development Workshops from AFOA Canada.

Please note that all programs and courses are delivered by AFOA Canada, please visit afoa.ca for course descriptions. Entry requirements, program acceptance, course availability and location of course delivery are determined by AFOA Canada. Applying for and/or being awarded a scholarship from the ILC does not constitute application or acceptance into AFOA Canada programs. In order to join an AFOA Canada program or course, you must qualify, apply and be approved through AFOA Canada’s application process. Please visit afoa.ca for more information.

Criteria


Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a member of AFOA Canada, or apply to become a member.
  • Must be First Nations, Inuit or Métis.
  • Employed in a financial and/or management position and/or attending school as a full-time student.
  • Reside or work in an Indigenous community/organization.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.

Submission Requirements

All application packages must include:

  • Proof AFOA Canada membership or proof of application to membership.
  • Proof of Indigenous ancestry.
  • Personal letter.
  • Two Letters of Reference, Recommendation and/or Support.
  • A completed application form.

Step-by-Step Application Process


  1. Review the General Regulations for the Scholarship & Bursary programs.
  2. Review the eligibility criteria and submission requirements.
  3. Complete an application form and submit it, along with the additional required documents, in one of four ways listed below. Keep a copy of the application package for your personal records.
  4. The ILC Selection Review Committee will review applications that have been submitted in full and on time.
  5. All applicants, successful or otherwise, will be notified of the ILC Selection Review Committee’s decision regarding their application.
